Game Watch: Men's B-ball - Cyclones vs. Hawks
Iowa State Cyclones (6-2) vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (7-2)
When: Friday, December 7th @ 5:05 p.m.
Where: Iowa City, IA Carver Hawkeye Arena
TV: BTN
Hawk Fans,
Now that we're a basketball school again, we've decided to host an Iowa men’s basketball game watch for the annual “Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk” game. Unlike the football game watches, this will likely be a low-key affair since the program is still trying to recover from the (yawn) Lickliter years. If we have a decent turn-out this week, we’ll likely schedule some future game watches once the BIG season kicks-off.
If you plan on attending, it would be extremely helpful if you could respond to this invite so we know how many TV’s to procure. Since the game is on a Friday night during Happy Hour we expect to compete with Buckley’s regular crowd.
Hope to see you there!
Go Hawks!

Game Watch Week 11: Iowa Hawkeyes (4-6, 2-4) vs. Michigan Wolverines
Iowa Hawkeyes (4-6, 2-4) vs Michigan Wolverines (7-3, 5-1)
Saturday, November 17th, 9:00am PST
TV: ESPN
Only two regular season games left! So come on down to Buckley’s on Queen Anne this Saturday morning and join the WWIC in watching the Hawks travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan.
Not a whole lot of good news coming out of Iowa City, so here’s a collection of random notes/links on the game:
•Saturday will be Iowa's first game of 2012 against a ranked opponent.
•Iowa has won the last three meetings vs Michigan and five of the last eight.
•Iowa leads the country with six games decided by three points or less.
•Michigan is 5-0 in home games, while Iowa is 2-2 in games away from home this season. The Wolverines have not lost a home contest (13-0) the last two seasons under Brady Hoke.
•Iowa needs victories in its final two contests to become bowl eligible for the 12th consecutive season.
•Iowa's 38-28 win over No. 24 Michigan on Oct. 16, 2010 was its last road victory over a ranked opponent.

Game Watch Week 10: Purdue Boilermakers (3-6, 0-5) vs Iowa Hawkeyes (4-5, 2-3)
Purdue Boilermakers (3-6, 0-5) vs Iowa Hawkeyes (4-5, 2-3)
Saturday, November 10th, 9:00am PST

First off, even though the game was a downer last weekend I want to thank everyone who came out and made Buckley’s a fun atmosphere. We had a large, festive crowd and even though the game didn’t pan out, good times were had by all. Thanks Hawk fans!
And onto this weekend! Come on down to Buckley’s on QA and watch the Hawks host Purdue in some new flashy uniforms: http://thegazette.com/2012/11/06/hawkeyes-look-this-week-honors-veterans/. (Note: it was just issued this afternoon that the players will not have branches of the military on the back of their jerseys and something else to honor the Vets will be there instead.)
Purdue holds a 45-34-3 advantage in the overall series against the Hawkeyes but Iowa has won five of the last six and 17 of the last 23 meetings. After a two-year hiatus on the schedule, Iowa won at Purdue 31-21 last year. Iowa owns a 20-18-2 advantage in games played at Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have averaged 30.7 points the last six home contests against Purdue, all Hawkeye victories. The Boilermakers' last victory in Kinnick Stadium was in 1992.
Purdue is coming in winless in the Big Ten and disappointed as many people pegged them as Big Ten dark horses this season. They will come in with a two QB system that likes to pass. So much so that they had 62 pass attempts last week against Penn State, the most by a Big Ten team this season.

I hope you’re sitting down for this; Iowa and Indiana still have a chance to make it to the Big Ten Championship game! Iowa sits behind Nebraska, Michigan, and Northwestern in the rankings and still have games coming up against the Wolverines and Cornhuskers. They do need some help in from Northwestern by losing a couple of games. A victory for Indiana would put them only one league game behind Wisconsin in the standings with a visit from the Badgers coming up next week. (Note: Indiana & Wisky only have a shot because OSU & PSU are not allowed to participate this year in the championship game due to NCAA sanctions.)
The Hawkeyes are looking to shake off another rough loss. Once again there are not a lot of positives to write about the Hawks so here’s a link to Ferentz’s weekly press conference: http://thegazette.com/ 2012/10/30/ the-walk-off-attrition-is-c ollege-football/. And for those of you who are calling for Ferentz’s job check out this article:http://iowa.scout.com/2/ 1234396.html.
Indiana is coming off of a huge win against Illinois which snapped an 11 game Big Ten losing streak. They run a very up-tempo offense and like to put a lot of points up on the board. They rank second in the Big Ten in total offense with 443.4 yards per game.
And finally I’ll end with this crazy fact: the Hoosiers, who started as three-point home underdogs to the Hawkeyes, are now favored for the first time in Big Ten play since Northwestern 2007.
Hope to see you Saturday afternoon and Go Hawks!

Iowa Hawkeyes (4-3, 2-1) vs Northwestern Wildcats (6-2, 2-2)
Saturday, October 27th, 9:00am kickoff PST
TV: ESPN2
Come on down to Buckley’s in Queen Anne this Saturday morning to watch the Hawkeyes head to Evanston to take on the Northwestern Nerds, whoops I mean Wildcats. Iowa and Northwestern have split their last four meetings at Ryan Field, dating back to 2001. Additionally, three of the last four overall meetings have been decided by seven points or less, with the fourth being decided by 10 points.
The Hawkeyes are looking to shake off a rough loss last weekend, there’s not a lot to write about the in the positive right now so I’ll let Coach Ferentz fill you in. Check this link out for his complete press conference this week: http://thegazette.com/2012/10/23/the-walk-off-weve-got-five-days-video-coming/.
Northwestern is building a very successful season as they are already bowl eligible, even after a crushing end of the game loss last weekend to Nebraska. They are once again led by an array of explosive players as they have scored over 21 points in all of their games this season. Keep an eye on running back Venric Mark as he leads the country in punt returns (25.1); ranks fifth in all-purpose yardage (183.8) and 18th in rushing (114.4). Mark needs 90 yards rushing to reach the 1,000-yard plateau this season.
For those of you needing a little ray of hope for Saturday morning here’s a fun fact: Saturday will be Iowa's third game away home playing on natural grass. Iowa is 2-0 this season when playing on natural grass. So you’re telling me there’s a chance!
Hope to see you Saturdy morning and Go Hawks!

Game Watch #7: PSU Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-0) vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-0)
Penn State Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-0) vs Iowa Hawkeyes (4-2, 2-0)
Saturday, October 20th, 5:00pm kickoff PST
TV: Big Ten Network
Come on down to Buckley’s on Queen Anne this Saturday night and join the WWIC in watching the Hawkeyes play host to the Nittany Lions of Penn State. It’s the first night game (and possibly only) of the season and they will be striping Kinnick Stadium once again with fans in alternating black and gold attire. Saturday night marks the 25th meeting between Iowa and Penn State; the...
series is even, 12-12. Iowa has won three of the last four and eight of the last 10 meetings against Penn State. PSU enters Saturday's game on a four-game winning streak after losing its first two, while Iowa has won its last two games. Both teams are 2-0 against Big Ten competition.
The Hawkeyes defense continues to put up impressive numbers led by lineback Anthony Hitchens who is having a sneaky great year. Hitchens has posted double-digit tackles the last 5 games and currently leads the nation, yes the nation, in tackles per game with 13. He has The Hawkeyes rank 14th in the country in turnover margin (+7), 19th in total defense (317.2), 21st in scoring defense (17.2), 28th in pass defense (199.8), 30th in pass efficiency defense (114.8), 31st in rushing defense (117.3), 34th in passes intercepted (7), 52nd in turnovers gained (11), and 53rd in tackles for loss (5.8).
Penn State is coming off a bye week after staging a 22-point 4th quarter in a comeback win against Northwestern two weeks ago. Their team seems to be rallying together in the wake of all of the stuff they’ve gone through in the offseason and PSU QB Matt McGloin has been putting up some impressive numbers. McGloin, who leads the Big Ten in passing yards per game (249.8), TD passes (12, tied with Nebraska’s Taylor Martinez) and is second in completions (136) and yards (1,499).
Finally, in career milestone news, Kirk Ferentz claimed his 100th victory as Iowa's head coach with last week's thrilling 19-16 double-overtime triumph at Michigan State. Ferentz is the 12th Big Ten coach with 100 victories. His overall record stands at 112-89 in 17 years as a head coach.
Fingers crossed the Hawks keep it rolling! Hope to see you Saturday night and Go Hawks!

Bring on Sparty! This Saturday the Hawkeyes travel East Lansing, MI to take on the Spartans of Michigan State in a Big Ten Legends Division showdown. The weather forecast is calling for rain in Seattle, so come on down to Buckley’s on QA and watch what should be a great game. Saturday will mark Iowa's first game against Michigan State in East Lansing since 2009, which provided the thrilling “7 got
6” ending where Ricky Stanzi found Marvin McNutt for a game-winning TD on 4th down to give the Hawks the victory. Here’s the video to relive the moment for yourself:http://youtu.be/ 7p9xT-7-UkU.
Iowa holds a 22-19-2 advantage in the series and the Hawkeyes have won two of the last three meetings, four of the last six and nine of the last 14, with four of the five losses coming at East Lansing. The home team has also won 11 of the last 13 games.
The Hawks are looking to continue what was a solid performance two weekends ago against Minnesota led by RB Mark Weisman, a dominating offensive line, and a team defensive effort that continues to perform way above expectations. One crazy stat that really shows how great the O-Line has been playing is after allowing six sacks in the season opener, Iowa's offensive line has not surrendered a single sack the last four games.
MSU is coming off a surprisingly close win at Indiana last weekend where they squeaked out a 31-27 victory. This is a pretty similar Spartan team that we’re used to seeing. They have an offense led by the very talented running back Le’Veon Bell, and a stout defense which returns 8 starters from last year. They sure do like that halftime break, MSU has outscored its opponents 74-23 in the second halves of games, including a 45-13 advantage in the fourth quarter. For some further reading on the Spartans, check out the latest 5 things they’ve learned after the last game: http:// www.lansingstatejournal.com /article/20121008/GW01/ 310080051/ Michigan-State-football?ody ssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext% 7CGreenAndWhite&nclick_che ck=1
One final random fact to leave you with is Iowa defensive coordinator Coach Phil Parker played at Michigan State, earning first team all-Big Ten honors from 1983-85. Parker was a graduate assistant coach when Michigan State won the 1987 league title and defeated Southern Cal (20-18) in the 1988 Rose Bowl. Hope to see you Saturday! Go Hawks!

our points (Minnesota wins of 22-21 in 2011 and 27-24 in 2010, both played in Minneapolis). And while the Hawkeye’s stare into their empty rivalry trophy case every day the Gophers are really enjoying a constant reminder of owning Floyd:https://pbs.twimg.com/ media/A3k2JnZCQAE6_3N.jpg.
The Hawkeyes are looking to bounce back fast after the inexcusable loss to a MAC team last week. One positive for the Hawks is the continued stellar play of running back Mark Weisman. Weisman rushed for 217 yards and three touchdowns and is the first player ever under Kirk Ferentz to score 6 TD’s (rushing/receiving) in 2 consecutive games. Saturday also marks the 200th game coached at Iowa for Kirk Ferentz. His overall record is 110-89.
Minnesota is riding high at 4-0 (the first time since 2008). They are led by a strong rushing attack and a defense that is playing well above expectations. One huge item of note is that the Gophers will be without starting QB MarQuies Gray this weekend. All of this winning is really messing with the Gopher fan-base. The Hawkeyes are looking to build off their interesting win against UNI. It looks like the offense is starting to come around with a “next man in approach” at running back and passing game where passes are finally completed. For those of you looking forward to seeing more of the hero of last week’s game fullback Mark Weisman, he’s listed as the starting running back this week with the other running backs still dinged up.
The Hawks defense continues to roll. They have yet to give up any points in the 4th quarter this season and have only allowed one second half touchdown in their first three games. The Hawkeyes rank 19th in the country in turnover margin (1.33), 23rd in total defense (294.0), 27th in pass defense (180.0), 28th in takeaways (6), 30th in red zone efficiency defense (.700), 32nd in pass defense efficiency (108.99) and 36th in rushing defense (114.0). Iowa has yielded 46 points through three games, which is the fewest a Hawkeye team has allowed the first three games since 2009 (36).
The Chippewas were off last weekend but started off the season beating Southeast Missouri State (38-27) and then losing to Michigan State (41-7). There’s not a lot of info on CMU out there yet and how they’ll match up with the Hawks, but I’ll post the Gazette’s match-ups later in the week on the event page.
Here’s to hoping the Hawkeyes continue to build momentum before Big Ten play opens up. Hope to see you Saturday and Go Hawks!

Game Watch Week 3: Northern Iowa Panthers (1-1) vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (1-1)
Saturday September 15th @ 12:42 p.m. PST
TV: Big Ten Network
Come on down to Buckley’s on Queen Anne this Saturday to watch the Hawkeyes play host to the second straight in-state rival, the Northern Iowa Panthers. These two teams have a long history. After falling to UNI in 1898 in the very first meeting, Iowa has won the last 14 meetings, including a 17-16 triumph in the last meeting (2009) in Iowa City.
The Hawkeyes look to shake off a tough loss against ISU. I could go on and on about the frustrating offense, but hey, our defense has been outstanding in the first two games. The Hawkeyes rank 13th in the country in red zone efficiency defense (0.57), 14th in pass defense (147.5), 18th in turnover margin (+3), 19th in takeaways (5), 20th in total defense (271.5), 25th in scoring defense (13.0), and 26th in tackles for loss (8). Let’s hope the offense catches up soon.
UNI comes into this game ranked seventh in the FCS and very confident after blowing out Division II Central State this past weekend 59-0. Week 1 they came very close to upsetting Wisconsin in Camp Randall, 26-21. This Gazette article has some good notes and quotes on the Panthers: http://thegazette.com/2012/09/10/farley-feels-shift-in-expectations-vs-iowabig-ten/
Should be a closer game than what we’d typically expect against UNI, but it’s at home, it’s “Be Bold, Wear Gold” day at Kinnick, and the Hawks have plenty to be fired up about! Hope to see you Saturday and Go Hawks!Come on down to Buckley’s on Queen Anne this Saturday to watch the Hawkeyes play host to the second straight in-state rival, the Northern Iowa Panthers.

Game Watch Week 2: Iowa State Cyclones (1-0, 0-0)
Iowa State Cyclones (1-0, 0-0) vs Iowa Hawkeyes (1-0, 0-0)
Saturday, September 8th, 12:42pm kickoff PST

Rivalry week is upon us! Come on down to Buckley’s on QA this Saturday to watch the Hawkeyes host in-state rival Iowa State. Saturday's game will mark the 60th game in the series in which Iowa holds a 39-20 advantage. The Hawkeyes have won 21 of the last 29 meetings, including three of the last four, four of the last six and six of the last nine. Iowa has also won the last four meetings against Iowa City.
Both the Hawks & Clones are coming off Week 1 performances where they had to come from behind to win the game. Iowa scored nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter to complete an 18-17 comeback win over Northern Illinois at Soldier Field and Iowa State rallied from a 16-7 deficit to post a 38-23 win over Tulsa last Saturday in Ames.
Iowa will be wearing throwback uniforms Saturday in honor of the 1921 and 1922 Hawkeye teams. Here’s a link to check them out: http://thegazette.com/2012/06/26/throwback-or-throw-it-back-iowas-jersey-for-this-years-iowa-state-game-circa-1921-22/.
With good reason the Hawks aren’t too pleased about the way they’ve performed in recent rivalry games. Here’s a good read on Iowa using a little bulletin board material:http://thegazette.com/2012/09/04/iowa-goes-moto/
Thanks to everyone who came out over the busy Labor Day weekend for the last game watch and we look forward to seeing more smiling faces this Saturday! Go Hawks!
